The upcoming disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Finland creates new challenges for safeguards. Part the national safeguards concept geological repositories, developed by STUK — Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, is non-destructive assay (NDA) verification all items before disposal. proposed system a combination PGET (Passive Gamma Emission Tomography), PNAR Neutron Albedo Reactivity) weight measuring NDA-instruments. takes pin-level image fission products inside assembly verifies multiplication assembly, quantity that correlates with fissile content. approved IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) measurements, but feasibility has not yet been established. A first its kind prototype instrument was built collaboration coordinated STUK. This paper concludes results measurements BWR (Boiling Water Reactor) July 2019.
